WELCOME TO 2nd GRADE!
We want to share with you all the amazing things we do in 2nd grade.
The second graders will learn the following under the Minnesota State Academic Standards guidelines:
READING:
Children are given direct and explicit instruction in the 5 areas of reading Instruction:
Direct and explicit instruction to help children develop the ability to express ideas effectively and legibly in complete sentences/simple paragraphs, while accurately applying basic grammar skills and proper spelling.
MATH:
Number concepts and an algebraic approach to word problems are the two main related core concepts taught. Children learn to add and subtract 2-digit numbers, tell time, and count money combinations, to name a few. They learn to solve and construct story problems and demonstrate reasoning and proof with their own math drawings. Concepts and skills in algebra, geometry, measurement, and graphing are explicitly taught along with these two core concepts.
RELIGION:
Children are taught basic Catholic beliefs toward liturgy and prayer, as well as a sense of community. Second graders prepare for their First Reconciliation, as well as their First Eucharist here at school, with help from their parish and family. Children learn the meaning of signs and events they may witness during Mass worship experiences. God the Father's love and goodness is at the center of all instruction. Children learn that Jesus (Both divine and human) is God's greatest gift to us, and is present in the Eucharist. Through scripture stories, the children come to understand the relationship of the Holy Spirit to the Father and the Son, as well as andthe role the Spirit plays in the life of every individual.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Citizenship and Government:
*Good citizenship; rights and responsibilities; laws; and leaders; at home, at school, and in the community.
*Community, State and National government and leaders
*Symbols of our country
Economics;
*Needs/wants; goods/services; making good choices with our money; producers/consumers; service workers and their jobs; trading for goods and services; spending and saving money.
Geography:
*Geography; location-- maps and globes; types of landforms and bodies of water; our environment; Earth's resources.
History:
*What is culture and how it is shared; how families are alike and different; family/community/national celebrations; Learning about Americas's past through folktales, myths, or legends.
*Children will come to learn how life changes throughout history by the study of life then and now.
SCIENCE:
Children will develop knowledge of and the ability to use the tools, skills, and methods of scientific inquiry. They will develop age-appropriate knowledge and understanding of life, earth and physical sciences. Children will learn key concepts about plants and animals; habitats; earth and space; matter and energy.
ARTS:
The children will learn and apply the elements of art design in their own created artwork, and come to know and understand various Artists and how they used these art elements in their own design (Artwork).

- Phonemic Awareness: auditory manipulation of sounds in spoken language.
- Phonics: Relationships between the letters of written language and the individual sounds (phonemes) of spoken language.
- Fluency: Ability to read grade-level texts with appropriate speed, accuracy, and expression.
- Vocabulary: Indirectly learned when seeing and hearing words used in various text, and directly learned when explicitly taught both individual words and word-learning strategies.
- Text comprehension: Direct instruction of specific comprehension strategies used to understand various text, and the ability to summarize text both orally and in written form.
